Pathology in Honiara

To improve the qulaity of medical services in the hospital of Honiara, Dr. Hermann Oberli asked us if we could help him with establishing a patholopgy service for the hospital in Honiara.

Establishing a simple histology lab

The first goal of our project is to establish a simple but complete histology lab in Honiara. This includes Fixation, Dehydration and embedding of the tissue. Cutting slides with a sledge microtome that we are bringing to Honiara and to stain those slides. For the moment the classic HE will do. If everything works out fine, other staining may be introduced at a later time.

Diagnosis over Internet

As there is no pathologists present in Honiara, the diagnosis will be given from remote. Therefore we will ecquip a microscope in Honiara with a digital camera, so that Dr. Oberli can capture images of the slides and send them to a pathologist.

With the help of the iPath telepathology system, developed at the Department of Pathology of Basel University, it will even be possible, that a pathologist from anywhere in the world can look into the microscope in Honiara over Internet.
