A week in the western provinceOur 3rd week we spent outside Honiara in the western province of Solomon Islands. The province is very different from the Capital. In Ghizo, with 5000 inhabitants the capital of the western province, there are approx. 500m af sealed road and may 5km dirt road. Cars are few and go very slowly. Just outside Ghizo is a large lagoon where we went snorkeling. A small uninhabited island in the lagoon is called Kennedy Island. Here president Kennedy stranded in WW2 after his ship was sunken by the Japanese. Obviously, Kennedy and his collegues survived their stay on the island. From Ghizo we went to the Marovo Lagoon, the world's largest, island enclosed lagoon. We stayed in the Uepi resort on the small Uepi Islands which is located on the border between the lagoon and the open ocean. So on one side there is the shallow lagoon and just 10 min snorkeling distance is the drop off to 2000m deep Pacific Ocean. Between there is a chanel where the tides go in and out and where there are plenty of fish to see. This is really a little paradise.
