05 Feb 2010 Portugal supports medical students in Cuba [Solomon Star]

Portugal provides USD 100,000 to pay for the allowances of (currently some 75) students studying medicine in Cuba. The students say they have not received any money from the government since the end of 2009.

Under an earlier agreement, Cuba pays for tuition fees and accommodation while the Solomon Islands Government has to pay for airfares and allowances. Iran has recently provided funds to pay for the airfares of the last group of students sent to Cuba.

09 Feb 2010 Fewer malaria cases [SIBC News]

Malaria incidence in Temotu Province dropped from 50 cases per 1,000 population in 2008 to 16 cases per 1,000 in 2009. The highest number of cases was recorded on Santa Cruz Island.

Malaria incidence in Western Province dropped by 39% to 25 cases per 1,000 tested persons in 2009. Places with the highest number of cases: Gizo, Munda, and the Shortland Islands.

Japan has handed over 10 new medical staff houses to Choiseul Province. One at Taro Hospital, one each at the Pangoe, Papara, Polo, Posarae, Sorovannga, Suska, and Voza Rural Health Centers, and one each at Luti and Nukiki Aid Posts.

Nine community clinics in western Makira will get free medical supplies provided by Medical Aid Abroad New Zealand Inc. next month. The local Takiri Community Group had asked the organization for help last year.

A community mental health consultant from the UK, Dr Ashok Singh, is currently in Solomon Islands to train 55 mental health staff in Honiara and at Kilu'ufi Hospital. The aim is to improve and modernize the country's mental health system. The visit is funded by WHO and will last three months.

A recent survey (based on the GYTS) shows that 24% of the 13 to 15-year-old students currently smoke and about 80% are exposed to smoke from others.

19 Mar 2010 Continuing education in Switzerland

Dr Alex Bradley Munamua from Solomon Islands is currently working as a visiting doctor at the cantonal hospital Uri in Altdorf, Switzerland. The hospital has been supporting Medizin im Südpazifik (South Pacific Medical Projects) for years and Co-Head of Department of Orthopedics, Dr. R. Joller, has been working in Solomon Islands several times. Dr Alex is expected to move to Interlaken Hospital at the end of this month.

23 Mar 2010 Medical team from Taiwan visits Solomon Islands [Solomon Star]

A five-member medical team from the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital (KMUH) in Taiwan is currently visiting the country for five days. They are here to offer free medical services in the fields of heart diseases, diabetes, gout, hypertension, and general medicine and to discuss future medical cooperation. They have donated equipment and supplies worth SBD 50,000 to the Good Samaritan Hospital in Tetere and will donate equipment and supplies worth SBD 1.5 million to the National Referral Hospital in Honiara.

The following figures were obtained from a survey conducted several years ago.

67% of the population are overweight, 37% have diabetes and 10% suffer from high blood pressure.

93% of the population consume less than five combined servings of fruit and vegetables a day, 62% chew betel nut and 31% smoke daily.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services hopes to start immunizing the population against the novel A (H1N1) virus by the end of this month. The necessary vaccines for about 10% of the population arrived last month and WHO promised more support to increase the coverage.

Daily power cuts due to power rationing by the Solomon Islands Electricity Authority also affect the water pumps of the Solomon Islands Water Authority in Honiara. This causes the water supply to the National Referral to stop before mid-day and continue again later in the afternoon. Unfortunately, not all hospital departments have access to water tanks to bridge the supply gap.

03 May 2010 More training for mental health staff [Solomon Star]

Dr Shobha Singh, a clinical psychologist from Lincolnshire (UK), is currently in Honiara to train mental health staff at the National Referral Hospital and the community mental health team (CMHT) in the areas of teaching, capacity building, counseling, cognitive therapy and post-traumatic stress disorder. The one month visit is funded by WHO.

11 May 2010 Training for rural health workers [Solomon Star]

23 doctors, nurses and midwives from the Western Province have completed a 5-day workshop on how to improve management of normal labor and childbirth, recognize the onset of complications, perform essential emergency interventions, and safely refer the mother and/or her newborn to a referral hospital, if required.

Another such workshop is taking place in Choiseul Province this week.

The workshops are supported by UNICEF.

21 May 2010 Update: Additionally, Choiseul Province has received relevant equipment worth about USD 50,000.

11 May 2010 New registered nurses [Solomon Star]

24 nurses (seven of them males) have successfully completed their probationary period and will become registered nurses (RN) today. 14 have received their training at the Solomon Islands College of Higher Education (SICHE) and 10 were trained at the Atoifi nursing school in Malaita. More than half of the new nurses will work in Honiara, the others will work in the provinces.

26 May 2010 Nursery ward at NRH needs repair [Island Sun]

Some part at the eastern end of the nursery ward building at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara seems to have fallen off. Parents are concerned rain will eventually leak into the building and water will drop down from the ceiling on to the sick children, when the part is not put back. However, nobody seems to take care of this problem.

01 Jun 2010 Medical team from Taiwan visits Solomon Islands [SIBC News, Solomon Star]

A mobile medical team from the Taiwan International Development and Cooperation Fund and the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital (KMUH) in Taiwan is currently visiting the country for two weeks. The five doctors in the team will offer free medical services especially in the fields of infection, surgery, dentistry, family medicine and pediatrics in the Seghe area of the Western Province and at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara. They will also donate some surgical equipment to Seghe Hospital and conduct medical workshops for the doctors at NRH.

10 Jun 2010 Free treated bednets for all [Island Sun]

Solomon Islands received 361,000 treated bednets at the beginning of this year. Hopefully, they will be distributed throughout the country by the end of the year. The bednets are given away for free but the distribution is controlled to reach as many households as possible.

The project is funded by The Global Fund, AusAID and the Solomon Islands Government and supported by WHO, Rotary and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community.

27 Jun 2010 Dr Alex visits former Swiss consul general

Dr Alex B. Munamua is currently working at the cantonal hospital Sankt Gallen and has recently visited Albert and Renate Mehr. Albert Mehr has been Swiss Consul General in Sydney, Australia and visited Solomon Islands in 2003. During his visit, he met the Prime Minister who expressed hopes Switzerland would continue to support the training of local doctors. Dr Alex's 6-month visit in Switzerland is part of this ongoing support.

Five volunteers from Japan will help in Solomon Islands' health sector during the next two years. After one month of learning pidgin, one each will work

  • in the malaria team (mainly in Guadalcanal Province)
  • in physical health (in Honiara)
  • as advisor to local nurses and doctors on how to use advanced medical equipment at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara
  • as midwifery lecturer at the Solomon Islands College of Higher Education
  • as assistance nurse at Buala Hospital in Isabel Province
